Matrimandir Sign Boards

The Matrimandir is the spiritual heart of Auroville, a utopian community near Pondicherry in India. Each day, visitors from around the world come to admire this golden architectural wonder, imagined and built during the fifty years since Auroville was founded.
As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, Pouce-Pied was asked to design signs to guide visitors during their Matrimandir experience. Images used had to be clear and accessible to everyone, regardless of nationality, fitting in with the pan-global ethos of the community.
We came up with two types of sign board: one in sand stone which is placed on the ground and one movable pole implanted in a granite base. The signs had to incorporate four languages (English, French, Tamil, and Hindi). To create the signs we worked in collaboration with our designer-friend Christilla Lostis; photos were taken by Dasha Iatsenko.
